The Domain Name System (DNS) is a central part of the Internet, providing a way to translate a domain name for a website you’re seeking into a numeric Internet Protocol (IP) address. Anything connected to the Internet - laptops, tablets, mobile phones, websites, etc. - relies on DNS to accurately associate domain names with their corresponding IP addresses. To get the most out of your online interactions, shouldn’t you choose a trusted provider that has unmatched DNS experience? Enter Verisign Public DNS.

Verisign Public DNS is a free DNS service that offers improved DNS stability and security over other alternatives. And, unlike many of the other DNS services out there, Verisign respects your privacy. We will not sell your public DNS data to third parties nor redirect your queries to serve you any ads.

How Public DNS Works

User enters a URL

User enters the URL www.example.com into a web browser.

Verisign Public DNS Resolver

The domain is sent to a recursive DNS resolver.

Root Server

Recursive resolver starts with the root server to find where to go to get the location for the requested top level domain name.

TLD Name Server

Recursive resolver checks with the Top Level Domain (TLD) Name Server to find where to go to get the location for the authoritative server for that domain.

Authoritative Server

This server knows the exact location for the full domain name and returns the answer to the recursive resolver (IP Address 72.13.63.55).

Resolution Complete

The recursive DNS resolver returns the actual location of www.example.com to the user.

www.example.com

The user’s web browser loads the page from www.example.com located at 72.13.63.55
